What's new

What changed in each version of Folia Files, newest first.

Version 1.2.4

Latest
  • A simpler search: type your words and choose where to look, In the name, In the text (documents, and the text macOS has read in screenshots and scans) or In pictures (what the photos show). Folia picks the fastest way (its index, Spotlight) and the results arrive almost at once, accents and case ignored.
  • A Filter in the search, as in the panes: kinds of files, and whether to include hidden files, system files and the contents of packages. The Mac’s own files are left out unless you include them.
  • The ⓘ of a search says what it could not search (a folder it couldn’t read, a place that’s gone, a folder macOS hides from Spotlight). A saved search you change offers Save in place, and the default saved searches follow the place chosen in Settings › Search.
  • Column View: Show Sizes puts each item’s size at the end of its row; Column Width has three choices (the width of the first column, or fitted to the names, with or without a limit), and a column you widen by hand keeps its width.
  • Info (⌘I) opens a window per item with every field, as in the Finder; the module is in File › Show Info Module (⌃⌘I).
  • Quick Actions ▸ in the context menu: your Automator Quick Actions made for the Finder, and those of macOS (encode audio and video files).
  • Server connections: what you read from a server is cached on the Mac, so copies no longer stall and the connection no longer drops in the middle; each connection has its Log, the Connections window edits the selected one in place, ⌘R reads a server folder again, and errors are said plainly.
  • VS Code style icons in every view and in search results, thumbnails in lists if you want them, and a folder tagged with a colour takes that colour. The Settings stay above Folia’s windows while you try them (a pin), and the preview can show small pictures at their real size.
  • An update now installs while you’re away (screen locked or Mac idle), and Folia comes back with its windows, tabs and connections. Video Tutorials… in the Help menu, and Skip on the welcome pages.
  • Fixed: two crashes (the toolbar’s » menu, the font list in Settings) and many freezes: the “already exists” dialog, opening an SFTP connection, Copy To and dragging files on a server, quitting, file icons when the display or the appearance changes.

Version 1.2.3

  • Fewer freezes: when many files change at once (a download, the index being built, folder sizes being measured) or a disk is mounted, the left sidebar, tags and folder sizes no longer block the window, sometimes for several seconds.
  • Info no longer downloads a file kept only in the cloud (iCloud Drive, Dropbox…): it shows its size and duration, and the rest once the file is downloaded.
  • A photo taken upright now has the same size everywhere: Info, the Dimensions column, Batch Actions and the clipboard history (3024 × 4032, not 4032 × 3024); a video’s size is rounded the same way.
  • The arrow on the column titles follows a sort chosen from a menu or a saved presentation (sorted by size, it stayed on “Name”).

Version 1.2.2

  • In a pane, iCloud Drive now lists the apps’ folders too (Keynote, Pages, Numbers, Preview, TextEdit, Shortcuts…), as the Finder does, with their app’s icon; a search in iCloud Drive looks in them as well.
  • These folders belong to their apps: Folia Files never renames, moves, hides, compresses or trashes them (they would leave iCloud); dragged elsewhere, they are copied.
  • Folder sizes count the files kept in iCloud only: the folders of an optimized iCloud Drive no longer read “Zero KB” — in every view, in Info and when sorting by size.
  • Branches: the number of items in a card’s header shows in full (it could be cut off on a Retina screen) and lines up with the close button; zoomed out, names and counts are no longer cut either.
  • The badges of the Arrivals module (“AirD…”) and the sizes in the Versions module no longer lose their last letters.

Version 1.2.1

  • Fixed a crash on macOS 26 with a Retina screen: Folia Files quit right after a license was activated, then each time License and Purchase was opened.
  • The update window and the “… already exists” dialog now take their size the same, safer way.

Version 1.2

  • Branches (⌘8), a new view: every folder you open becomes a card beside its parent, joined by a curve — a project or a whole disk at a glance. Zoom out to see the whole map, move or resize the cards, sort each one its own way; the pane keeps its map for next time.
  • Your context menu: Settings › Context Menu lists every action of the file menus — keep it, move it into More or hide it, and drag to reorder.
  • What Finder extensions used to add, now built in: the sync status of iCloud Drive (and of the other clouds that report it) next to each name; Open in Editor (VS Code, Cursor, Zed, Xcode…); Hide and Unhide; Copy To and Move To another pane, a favorite or a recent folder; Extract To; 7z archives, or Each Item Separately; Copy Share Link… for clouds connected in Folia Files; Dimensions and Duration columns.
  • New Folder with Selection (⌃⌘N), as in the Finder, undone with ⌘Z.
  • Searches stay up to date: with Spotlight or Folia Files’ index, files that arrive, change or leave show in the results right away; Run Again (⌘R) reruns any search.
  • Columns: the Preview Column can be turned off, and columns fitted to their names are never wider than the first.
  • In the left sidebar, iCloud Drive shows the apps’ folders (Keynote, Pages, Preview…) as the Finder does, and links to folders unfold like folders; the Space bar previews search results.
  • Empty Trash deals with what refused to go: apps installed for all users are deleted after a single password prompt, and Folia Files says what stays and why.
  • Fixed: a crash in the Columns view when a selection went through another folder than the one shown.

Version 1.1.1

  • Services at the end of the context menu, as in the Finder: Automator Quick Actions, shortcuts shown in the Services menu and other apps’ services, for the selected files or, on the background, the folder. Folia Files › Services now works on the selection too.
  • Share lists the share services right in the context menu (Messages, Mail, Notes, AirDrop, other apps’ share extensions…), then More Options….
  • The Detailed Size command (Settings › Commands) now shows the size of each item in the folder, largest first, with the total, written as the panes write sizes; with several items selected, the size of each. It only gave the folder’s total.
  • The Drawer now also opens for a picture or a link dragged from Safari against the screen’s edge (and for a photo from Photos, an attachment from Mail…); dropped on its Shelf, it is saved in Downloads. It only opened for files.

Version 1.1

  • One search for everything: the toolbar’s Find button, ⇧⌘F, the magnifying glass of each pane, saved searches and tags all open the Search module, at the top of the tab. Its new engine, Contents, finds files by what they say, best matches first, and shows why each one was found. ⌘F searches the active pane’s folder as you type (Settings › Search).
  • Search criteria fit on one line, joined by and / or; Ask Folia reads PDFs, Word documents and more when you look for words inside files.
  • Tree, the 21st module: your favorites, clouds, servers and disks as a tree that follows and drives the pane you pick with a click. In the left sidebar, the Compact tree shows only the path to the open folder (Settings › Left Sidebar), and Keep Shortcuts at the Top gives favorites, searches and tags a list of their own above the trees.
  • Folders on Top and Fit Columns to Names, for each pane, and saved with a folder’s view like the rest (the pane’s gear, the View menu, Settings › Panes). In columns, double-click a column’s handle to fit it to its names (⌥: all of them); new columns open at the first one’s width.
  • Tabs between windows: drag a tab out of the bar to open it in a new window, or onto another window to join its tabs, with its panes, history and terminals. All your windows come back at the next launch.
  • New Tab (⌘T) opens an empty pane where you choose a folder or a module (or always your folder: Settings › Panes); a layout opens with all its places to fill; a tab can show modules only.
  • Image and Video in the context menu: resize, convert to JPEG, PNG, HEIC or TIFF, rotate, flip, remove the location or the metadata; convert a video to MP4 (H.264 or HEVC), 1080p or 720p, or extract its audio (M4A). Always a new file next to the original.
  • The Recents module shows folders too: files, folders or both.
  • Module panes count as the active pane (⌃⇥ goes from pane to pane) and can be cloned; Escape deselects; New File shows each template with its type’s icon; a narrow window hides the rightmost toolbar buttons first, and Customize Toolbar… is in every toolbar menu.
  • Safer with your files: an audit of everything that could lose a file brought dozens of fixes (merging folders, Duplicates, uninstalling apps, copies opened from Versions, folder customizations, restored settings, linked terminals), and ⌘Z undoes more, such as Permissions and Locked in Info.
  • Fixed: the Drawer did not open when you dragged a file from Folia Files itself to the screen’s edge; “Show in Finder” in another app did nothing while Folia Files was closed; a name being renamed in columns turned white after a click.
  • Also fixed: the pCloud row of the left sidebar folding and unfolding endlessly; quitting with an rclone mount could hang; many freezes (switching views, opening a file, the Map, folders that keep changing, network drives, changing screens, unfolding a folder in the sidebar).

Version 1.0.4

  • Thirteen new modules: Notes (checklists, lists, titles, highlights, and a note for each folder), Map (a folder’s photos on a map), Activity (processor, memory, network, disks, energy and the busiest apps, live), Versions (a file’s earlier versions, from macOS, your backups and Time Machine), Tags, Duplicates, Timeline, Arrivals, Trash, Quick Actions, Disks, Operations and Backups. Put them in the right sidebar or under the left sidebar.
  • Any module as a pane: drop New Pane where you want it, then choose what it shows, a folder or a module. A new pane opens on the folder chosen in Settings › Panes; Clone (⌘\ and ⇧⌘\) still copies the active pane.
  • Each pane keeps its view as you browse. Save a view for a folder, or for a folder and its subfolders, from the pane’s gear, which replaces the padlock; a dot on the gear tells you a saved view was changed.
  • Seven views: a new List with names only; the former list is now the Detailed List. Shortcuts ⌘1 to ⌘7.
  • Advanced Search looks Everywhere (every disk and cloud of this Mac) or in several places at once, and a saved search can be edited and updated.
  • Search in Settings: a field at the top of the list (⌘F) finds any setting and takes you there.
  • Dates your way (Settings › Panes): format, time, and relative dates such as “5 min ago”.
  • Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files have their own icons and open in your browser.
  • The Finder’s comments show in Info, and can be edited there.
  • Each sidebar has its own toolbar buttons (Modules, Collapse All), and keeps its width when you close and reopen it.
  • Compressing shows its progress file by file, and can be paused or cancelled.
  • Better with VoiceOver; Reduce Transparency, Increase Contrast and Reduce Motion are followed as soon as you change them.
  • Fixed: Copy (⌘C) did not copy files.
  • Also fixed: the name of a new folder closed at the first key; ⌘I closed Info the second time; “Show in Finder” in other apps did nothing when Folia Files is your file viewer; dragging from the columns view to another pane, and renaming there; the free space of disks not updating; several freezes.

Version 1.0.3

  • Japanese, Portuguese and Chinese: the search texts now say exactly what works in these languages: keyword search everywhere, search by meaning in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.
  • The daily update check now also says, anonymously, whether this Mac is in its trial or licensed (nothing identifies the Mac; see the privacy policy).

Version 1.0.2

  • Fixed: installing an update from within the app could stop with “the new version’s signature is not valid”.

Version 1.0.1

  • Search in the folder: the toolbar’s field searches the active pane’s folder and its subfolders; the results show in the pane, each with its location as a path you can click.
  • Advanced Search has its own toolbar button (⇧⌘F), and a new Search module for the right sidebar.
  • SVG files are previewed as pictures.
  • Fixed: a layout with three or four panes chosen with a single pane open now opens all of them.
  • AirDrop’s official icon.
