Folia Files vs Path Finder

Looking for a Path Finder alternative?

Path Finder is the veteran power-user file manager for the Mac. Since 2022 it is sold by subscription or by licenses with a limited number of years of updates. Folia Files is a modern alternative you buy once — here is how they compare.

In short

Path Finder has a deep toolbox (Drop Stack, Git, hex editor, process viewer, Size Browser) and costs $29.95 a year, or $32.95 to $122.95 for one to five years of updates. Folia Files costs $49.99 once and adds what Path Finder lacks: servers mounted as disks (SMB, WebDAV, FTP, and SFTP or S3 through rclone), search inside documents and images, more than two panes with saved scenes, a clipboard history and an assistant in Open and Save dialogs.

What Path Finder does well

Path Finder has been around for twenty years and it shows in the depth of its toolbox: the Drop Stack to collect files, modules you arrange around the browser, a terminal that follows the folder, Git status, a hex editor, a process viewer, the Size Browser to see what takes space, FolderSync, folder comparison and a duplicate finder. It can also browse an iPhone connected by USB.

What changes with Folia Files

Folia Files mounts your servers like disks — SMB, WebDAV, FTP, AFP, NFS, and SFTP, S3 or clouds through rclone — where Path Finder only uploads to remote servers. It searches the text of documents and screenshots, and photos by what they show, keeps a history where every operation can be undone, and splits its window into as many panes as you need.

  • Scenes: whole layouts saved and reopened with ⌃⌘1 to ⌃⌘9
  • A clipboard history and a drawer at the screen edge
  • A panel next to every app's Open and Save dialogs
  • Mac care: cleanup and app uninstall with leftovers
Servers and clouds in Folia Files: a NAS, a Nextcloud, an SFTP server and Backblaze B2

Subscription or one purchase

Path Finder: $2.95 a month or $29.95 a year (two Macs), or a license with 1, 2 or 5 years of updates ($32.95, $55.95, $122.95, three Macs); version 26 was a paid upgrade. Folia Files: $49.99, once, for up to three Macs at a time, every future update included, with a 7-day trial.

Which one to choose

Path Finder, if…

  • You use its specialist tools: Git, hex editor, process viewer, iPhone browsing
  • You like its modules arrangement and Drop Stack
  • A subscription doesn't bother you

Folia Files, if…

  • You want to stop paying every year
  • You want your servers and NAS mounted like disks
  • You want more than two panes and saved scenes
  • You want to search inside documents and images, a clipboard history and Open/Save dialog help

Questions

Yes, in the website edition: a terminal under each pane that follows its folder, with color schemes and iTerm2 or Ghostty themes.

The Shelf: drop files on it from anywhere, then drag them where they go. It is in the drawer at the screen edge, the right sidebar and the Open and Save assistant.

Space Lens shows any folder as bubbles by size; the Mac care section finds what can be cleaned safely.
