What the Finder still can't do

The Finder has improved — tabs, folder colors and icons since macOS 26, a short clipboard history in Spotlight — but it still has no panes side by side, no SFTP, no folder sync or comparison, no way to save a window layout, no duplicate finder and no batch rename by the date a photo was taken. Copy-and-move uses ⌥⌘V rather than a real cut. That is why these apps exist.

Coming from Windows? What changes

How we chose and checked

We kept native file managers that are maintained and sold or downloaded in 2026, and read each maker's website, documentation and release notes on 3 October 2026. Where a maker doesn't say whether a feature exists, we say so rather than guess. Corrections are welcome at support@foliafiles.com.

Questions

Nimble Commander is free and open source, with servers and a terminal; Commander One's free version has two panes and tabs; Marta is a free beta; Kondor Lite is free for local files. Folia Files is not free but has a 7-day trial with every feature.

Folia Files, Commander One PRO, QSpace Pro, Bloom, WhimFiles and Default Folder X are one-time purchases. ForkLift is one-time with one or two years of updates. Path Finder is a subscription or a license with one to five years of updates.

Folia Files can become the default file browser, so that “Show in Finder” in other apps opens Folia Files. The Finder itself stays, for the desktop and the system.
