Yoink and Dropover alternative
A shelf at the edge of the screen — with a file manager behind it
Yoink and Dropover give the Mac what drag and drop lacks: a shelf to set files down on the way from one app to another. Folia Files has one too — the Shelf, in a drawer that slides out over any app with your favorite folders, the clipboard history and AirDrop — inside a complete file manager.

In short
Yoink ($8.99 once, 28-day trial, macOS 10.13 or later; also on Setapp, and as a separate app for iPhone and iPad) appears at the edge of the screen as soon as you drag something, groups what you drop together into stacks, keeps recent copies and passes files between your devices with Handoff. Dropover (free, Pro $7.99 once, macOS 13 or later) opens a floating shelf when you shake the pointer, keeps as many named shelves as you like, and resizes, converts, zips or uploads what they hold for a share link. Folia Files ($49.99 once, a full file manager) opens a drawer at the edge of the screen when you push a file against it or press ⌃⌥E, with the Shelf, your favorite folders to file into, the clipboard history and AirDrop. Choose Yoink or Dropover for a shelf that goes further; choose Folia Files for the drawer and the file manager in one app.

What Yoink and Dropover do better
Yoink appears the moment you start dragging — at the edge of the screen, only when you get near it, or right at the pointer — and groups what you drop together into stacks. It also comes as a separate app for iPhone and iPad, and Handoff passes files between them and your Macs.
Dropover opens a floating shelf wherever you shake the pointer, as many as you need, named and color-coded, and reopens the last ten you closed. Its shelves act on what they hold: resize or convert images, extract text, make a ZIP, upload to Dropover Cloud, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or Amazon S3 and copy a share link, run your scripts and Shortcuts, gather new screenshots from watched folders. If you rely on any of this, keep them: Folia Files works next to both.
What you get with Folia Files
Push a file against the edge of the screen, or press ⌃⌥E from any app, and the drawer slides out over the app you are in without taking the focus from it. Drop the file on the Shelf and carry on; drag it out when you get where it goes. The Shelf keeps references, not copies: nothing moves until you drop it somewhere, and an item follows its file when it is moved or renamed.
- Text, pictures, links and files promised by Mail, Photos or Safari become files, saved in Downloads
- Your favorite folders: drop a file on one to file it there (⌥ to copy), or on an app to open it with that app
- The clipboard history (⌃⌥V) and AirDrop as modules: drop files on AirDrop to send them
- Share › Folia Files and a Shortcuts action put files on the Shelf
- The edge you choose — left, right, top or bottom —, its size and opacity; the pin keeps it open
One Shelf, everywhere in Folia Files
The Shelf in the drawer is the same one as in the window's right sidebar and next to Open and Save dialogs: set a file down in one place, pick it up in another. Gather files from several folders for an email or an upload, then drag them where they go, or copy or move them to the folder you have open.
And behind the drawer there is a complete file manager: panes side by side, tabs, search, servers and clouds, and an undo history.

Which one to choose
Yoink or Dropover, if…
- You want a shelf that appears at the pointer, or several named shelves
- You pass files between your Mac, iPhone and iPad (Yoink)
- Your shelves should upload, make share links, resize images or run scripts (Dropover)
- You want a small app that does one thing
Folia Files, if…
- You want the Shelf, your favorite folders, the clipboard and AirDrop in one drawer
- You want to file what you drop in one gesture, on a favorite folder
- You want the same Shelf in your file manager and next to Open and Save dialogs
- You'd rather have one app that is also your file manager, paid once
Website edition and Mac App Store
The drawer, the Shelf, the clipboard history and AirDrop are in both editions. The Shelf next to Open and Save dialogs comes with the dialog assistant: in the website edition, and in the Mac App Store edition with Folia Files Companion (free).
Questions
Yes. If Yoink also appears at the edge of the screen when you drag, put Folia Files' drawer on another edge, or turn off “Opens when I push a file against this edge of the screen” in Settings › Drawer: ⌃⌥E still opens it.
No. It keeps a reference to each file, which follows it if it is moved or renamed, up to 5,000 items. Text, pictures and links you drop on it are first saved as files in your Downloads folder.
No, Folia Files is a Mac app. To pass files to an iPhone or iPad, drop them on AirDrop in the drawer; Yoink, with its own apps and Handoff, goes further.
macOS 14 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. It is in 8 languages and is sold on its website, and soon on the Mac App Store.
