In short
Folia Files syncs folders in two modes: Copy, which never deletes anything at the destination, and Mirror, which makes the destination identical. Before a mirror removes files, it is simulated and you confirm with the real number of files. Backups keep dated copies of your folders on a disk or a NAS, continuously, on a schedule or when the disk is plugged in, and any file comes back in one click.
Sync: Copy or Mirror
Copy sends new and changed files and never deletes anything at the destination. Mirror makes the destination an exact copy, removals included. Compare files by size and date (fast) or by their SHA-256 fingerprint (exact).
Run a sync by hand, at a regular interval, every day, or as soon as something changes in the source.
- Never a mirror from an empty or missing source
- A simulation and your confirmation before any large deletion
- A scheduled sync that would delete a lot is skipped and reported
Backups you can browse
Choose folders and a destination — a disk, a NAS. Folia Files keeps dated copies, continuously, on a schedule or when the disk is plugged in. Unchanged files are hard links, so each backup only takes the room of what changed.
The two most recent backups are never deleted to make room. What could not be read at one backup is carried over from the previous one, never counted as deleted.
Compare before you trust
The compare tool shows two folders side by side: added, removed and changed files. Use it to check a backup or a copy on a server.

Website edition and Mac App Store
Backups work in both editions. Folder sync is in the website edition, and in the Mac App Store edition with Folia Files Companion (free).
Questions
It is a complement: Time Machine protects the whole Mac; Folia Files backs up the folders you choose, where you choose, for example on a NAS, and lets you browse each date like a folder.
It refuses to mirror from a source that has no files or whose disk is missing, simulates every mirror first and asks you to confirm the real number of files it would remove.
